The Roero
The area known as the Roero is a cluster of hills stretching out to the left of the River Tanaro, proudly facing the Langhe. Relatively young in geological terms, it is formed mostly of clay, marl and sandstone.

It is not unusual either to come across veritable naturalist oases of considerable charm, where erosion has taken place to form rocky ravines: the so-called “Rocche”. Not to be missed is the Ecomuseum of the Rocche, which was set up to promote this spectacular land.

The Roero is an aristocratic territory: aristocratic both in its name, which refers to the noble Roero family, and in its landscape, which is strewn with soaring towers, castles and belfries. Despite the ravages of time, in fact, this area can lay claim to such an impressive wealth of fortresses and manor houses that it can be considered a precious treasure chest of fine gems testifying to the lively mediaeval period in its history, and to a deep-rooted country culture.
The Roero’s image is that of a lively, dynamic area. The landscape is very varied, with the wild spaces of the Rocche alternating in rapid sequences with variformed, orderly hillside and woodland settings.

The network of wine trails cross over from the Langhe to these hills, which are harsh and intensely vegetative on the one hand, and soft and gentle on the other, merging harmoniously with the fruit orchards that are a typical feature of this area.

The peach tree, in particular, lords it over this land, along with the Madernassa species of pear, the strawberries of Sommariva Perno, and the bountiful fresh produce of the vegetable gardens of Bra, its main town. Another precious resource for the area is its flourishing beekeeping industry, which began in the early 1800s amidst the chestnut woods of the Rocche.

And wine-growing is no less important here than in the Langhe, clad as the hillsides are with a myriad of small vineyards weaving a mosaic formed of the strangest shapes.
The vine and wine represent culture, passion and pride, with the first mentions of the great local wines - Favorita, Bonarda, Roero, Roero Arneis - dating as far back as the 1300s.

Visitors to the Roero are treated to an unforgettable spectacle, with the sunlight on the vineyards and the shade of the woods, and the vibrant colours of the earth and the unusual hues of the hills affording a breathtaking landscape: a custodian of different, yet inseparable spirits, divided and joined at the same time by the Rocche that emerge from the heart of the hills to cross the entire territory.
