The origins of Bra are to be found in nearby Pollenzo, where Roman civilisation laid the foundations of its urban fabric on the remains of a large amphitheatre. Modern-day Pollenzo owes its prestige to the Agency, once the administrative centre built by King Charles Albert of Savoy for the estate he owned here, and famous today for housing the first University of Food Sciences and the first Wine Bank. The original nucleus of the town of Bra grew out of the decline of Pollenzo.
Today Bra is one of the leading centres of the Piedmontese Baroque style of architecture: standing out among the imposing buildings looking out onto the old market square, Piazza Caduti per la Libertà (Fallen for Freedom), are the Town Hall and St. Andrew’s Church.
A picturesque view of the old town centre can be enjoyed from the historically older part of the square, known as “La Rocca” (The Rock), a genuine Italian-style piazza offering the pleasure of sitting outside one of the delightful old cafés for a chat over a cup of coffee.
Elegance merges with the pleasures of the table: Bra is now inseparably associated with Slow Food, the international organization which safeguards and promotes agricultural and food & wine traditions with the aim of “teaching taste and tasting”.
It is indeed no mere coincidence that every two years Bra hosts the most important international event dedicated to quality cheeses, called - appropriately enough - “Cheese”. Gourmets meanwhile will find themselves treated to another speciality: Bra sausage. Made from veal, it was given special status through a Royal Concession granted by the House of Savoy prohibiting the production of beef sausage throughout the national territory with the sole exception of Bra!
