An important feature of this area is its food & wine culture, which the experts refer to as “enogastronomia”. Although the cuisine of the Langhe, Monferrato and Roero is based on the distinctive simplicity of local farmhouse cooking, it is so rich that it is practically impossible to paint a complete picture.
Originating from the poverty-stricken conditions experienced in the area in past centuries, it has become more elaborate, while continuing to use all the locally-sourced ingredients and natural components. Neat and tidy trattorias can be found alongside elegant restaurants, offering genuine cooking served with outstanding wines.
Great Wines and precious Truffles
And in this land of great Wines, the famous White Truffle of Alba - which has always graced tables throughout the world - unfailingly plays a leading role. Each weekend throughout autumn, the capital of the Langhe hosts the most important White Truffle market in the world, where dozens of truffle-hunters display the “diamonds” unearthed during the night.
Visitors can even take part in the most secret of activities: the search. Accompanying a “trifolao”, escorted as ever by his faithful dog, and listening to the stories of great adventures on dark, misty nights is the most authentic experience that can be had in an extraordinary world.
